[va'lãs], Stadt in Südfrankreich, Verwaltungssitz des Départements Drôme, an der mittleren Rhône unterhalb der Isèremündung, 63 400 Einwohner; Bischofssitz; Kunstmuseum; landwirtschaftliches Handelszentrum in einem Obstbaugebiet; Maschinen- und Apparatebau, Elektro-, Textil-, Möbel- und Nahrungsmittelindustrie, Schmuckherstellung; Flugplatz.
 
 
Romanische Kathedrale (11./12. Jahrhundert, im 17. Jahrhundert erneuert), Grabkapelle von 1548 (»le Pendentif«) und mehrere Häuser aus dem 16. Jahrhundert; im ehemaligen Bischofspalast (16./18. Jahrhundert) Museum.
 
 
Valence, als Valẹntia Hauptort der keltischen Segallauni (Segovellauni), wohl seit Caesar römische Kolonie, ist seit dem 4. Jahrhundert Sitz eines Bischofs, der auch die Regierungsgewalt in der Stadt errang. Kaiser Friedrich Barbarossa bestätigte 1157 den Bischöfen ihre Unabhängigkeit und Lehnsherrschaft über die Stadt. 1449 erkannten die Bischöfe die Lehnshoheit des französischen Königs an, der die Stadt 1452 mit einer Universität ausstattete (in der Französischen Revolution aufgehoben).
